Modern Crochet Designs for All!
Hey everyone, I’m Divya, the Designer and maker behind Stringtierey.
I started crochet almost 19 years back, as a hobby and a summer project after Highschool. Of all the crafts I learnt, from fabric painting, to stuffed toy making, Crochet was the only craft that always kept me wanting for more and stuck with me for lifetime. After completing my studies, post-graduation and a couple of years into working a full-time job, the creative side of me was craving to get back into crafts, and that’s when Stringtierey was born. It’s been 2 and a half years now since I started Stringtierey and this whole journey has been so fulfilling.
So when I found out about Elisabeth doing a stitch tutorial series I had to hop to show of one of my favourite and versatile stitches. The Fantail Shell Stitch (FSS).
I love all types of shell stitches, but when I came across the Fantail Shell Stitch, it just hit the nail on the right spot! The combination of a normal shell stitch with a V stitch elevates it to another level giving a stitch so beautiful, it blew my mind off!! The Fantail Shell stitch provides for a dual texture, one the shell stitch makes it solid and gives it the shape, and two the use of the V stitch creates a beautiful drop shape lace, that makes this stitch perfect for all the fall, spring projects.
● If working in flat rows, this stitch is worked in multiples of 8 plus 1st. If working in the round, this stitch is worked in multiples of 8 st.
● The FSS is a repeat of 4 rows in total to get the full effect of the stitch.
● The Stitch instructions are written in US terms.
● The FSS instructions are written in crochet short hand, for eg. “sc 2” means single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, “2sc” means make 2 single crochet in the same stitch.
● ch3 at the start of any row is counted as 1 dc.
● ch1 at the start of any row is not counted as a stitch.
● Any yarn weight with the recommended hook size.
● For a gauge swatch of 6” x 6” in worsted weight yarn– you will need maximum 100 yards and 5.5mm hook size.
● Scissors and Yarn needle.
● Ch – Chain
● Sc – Single crochet
● St(s) – Stitch(es)
● sk st(s) – skip stitch(es)
● Dc – Double crochet
● V stitch – (DC, ch1, DC) in the same stitch.
The swatch sample is made in worsted weight yarn ( Lion brand Mandala Ombre) and 5.5mm hook size.
Row 1: Make any multiple of 8 ch plus 1. ( for the sample I’ll be making 24+1 =25 chs). Add additional 1 more ch to give it height.
Row 2: Turn. In the 2nd ch from the hook, make one sc, * sk 3, 9 dc in the next st (1 cluster), sk 3, sc in the next * Repeat instructions from * to * till the end.
Row 3: Turn. Ch3, dc in the same st, ch 2, sk 4, * sc in the 5th st of the cluster, ch 2, sk 4, V st in the sc from previous row, ch 2, sk 4 * Repeat instructions from * to * till the last cluster, Sc in the 5th st of the last cluster, ch 2, sk 4, 2dc in the last st.
Row 4: Turn. Ch3, 4 dc in the space between the 2dc of the previous row, sk 2 * sc above the sc from previous row, sk 3, 9 dc into the ch sp of the V st, sk 3, * Repeat * to * till the last V st, sc above the sc from previous row, sk 3, 5 dc in between the dc and ch3 of previous row.
Row 5: Turn. Ch 1, sc in the first st, * ch 2, sk 4, V st in the sc of previous row, ch 2, sk 4, sc in the 5th st of the cluster * Repeat * to * till the end.
Row 6: Turn. Ch 1, sc in the first st, * sk 3, 9 dc in the ch sp of the V st, sk 3, sc in the next * Repeat instructions from * to * till the end.
Repeat rows 3 – 6 for required length. End on row 3 or row 5 repeat
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
And you are done!! Use the FSS in any project and make it beautiful and unique.

The FSS is such a versatile stitch that it can be used for any kind of projects from beanies, blankets, scarves to garments. It also looks great worked up in any kind of yarn from single colour solid shades to multicolour and even variegated yarn.
