The Crochet Autumn Cable Dress is something that I have always wanted to create. I always loved knitting cable clothing but never thought I would be able to make one. Then a couple of years ago I discovered you could create cables in crochet and since then I have learned a great deal about it, but not really done much with them. I had a load of purple Aran yarn sitting in my stash and it was originally bought with the purpose of making a cabled jumper for myself, however, that seemed too ambitious to start off with. That is when the idea of a jumper dress for my daughter came to mind. This seemed like the perfect practice before starting an adult sized piece of clothing. I originally made a sample with different cable ideas and once I had those in mind, the rest of the dress worked up smoothly (once I got all the measurements worked out.

This dress is designed for a 4-5-year-old and has quite a bit of stretch in so will fit a child with a chest up to around 60 cm in diameter. The length is adjustable if it turns out too short for your child. This dress has short sleeves and so will work well for a slightly cool autumn day with a pair of tights and a long sleeved t-shirt underneath. Paired with some boots this will the perfect outfit for any little girl this autumn.

Materials and Resources

Below is a list of everything you will need to make this —

• Women’s Institute Aran – 1 400g ball in Purple (or 300g of any worsted / Aran weight yarn)
• 5mm hook
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors

Below is a list of all the stitches (and their abbreviations) featured in this pattern.  All terms used are American.

• Fsc – foundation single crochet
• Hdc – half double crochet
• Hdc dec – half double crochet decrease
• Fpdc – front post double crochet
• Bpdc – back post double crochet
• Fptrc – front post treble crochet
• Fpdtrc – front post double treble crochet
• Sl st – slip stitch

Special Cable Stitches

• Trc X (worked over a block of 4 fpdc) – fptrc in the 3^rd stitch, fptrc in the 4^th stitch, fptrc in the 1^st stitch, fptrc in the 2^nd stitch)
• Fpdtrc X (worked over a block of 6 fpdc) fpdtrc in the 5^th stitch, fpdtrc in the 6^th stitch, fpdc in the 3^rd stitch, fpdc in the 4^th stitch, fpdtrc in the 1^st stitch, fpdtrc in the 2^nd stitch.
• 2 x trcX – (Worked over a block of 6 fpdc) – fptrc in the 3^rd stitch, fpdc in the 2^nd stitch, fptrc in the 1^st stitch, fptrc in the 6^th stitch, pfdc in the 5^th stitch, fptrc in the 4^th stitch.

Here are a few handy tips to help you with the pattern.

• The Gauge is 12 rows and 12 stitches of hdc in a 10cm square.
• The finished dress measures 47cm long and has a 50cm chest but this has a lot of stretch and so can fit up to a 60cm chest.
• If you want to make the dress longer then you can keep repeating the section in rows 11-18 in keeping with the pattern.  
• This dress is worked in the round, but to keep the seams even at the back you need to turn at the end of each row, this is especially important in the cable sections.
• The back of each cable change is always done in bpdc and you need to be careful to keep the new pattern, so make sure the back post stitches are done in the right order.   (it is best to check to front as you work them!)
• The dress is worked in one piece, with the neck edge and sleeves finished at the end.
• All hdc ch 1 hdc from row 3 onwards are worked in the ch 1 spaces of the previous round.   In row 2 they are just worked into the same stitch.
